Cantina Goccia

Leading the Packaging Revolution, one bottle at a time

Sustainable Wines from the Heart of Umbria: Cantina Goccia has always been committed to sustainability and aims to reduce the environmental impact of its wines. Aware that over 50% of the carbon footprint of bottled wines comes from glass bottles and transportation, in 2020 we pioneered the use of the Frugalpac bottle: five times lighter and with an 84% lower carbon footprint compared to glass. A true green revolution!

Sustainability is Our Standard

For us, sustainability means concrete choices at every stage: in the vineyard we farm organically, safeguard biodiversity, and minimize inputs, water, and energy; in the cellar we measure and continuously improve our processes. In packaging, we prioritise low-carbon solutions. Every choice reduces environmental impact, in respect of the wine and the land. Sustainability is our standard!

The Frugal Bottle: Sustainable Innovation

The 75cl Frugal Bottle is made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade liner to hold the wine. Developed by UK-based Frugalpac, specialists in sustainable packaging, the bottle was created to drastically reduce environmental impact.

Why it’s unique:

  • Lightweight: Weighs only 83g – up to five times less than a glass bottle. Easier to carry, lower transport emissions.
  • Sustainable: Life Cycle Analysis (Intertek) found it has up to 84% lower carbon footprint than glass and over one third less than recycled plastic.
  • Easy to recycle: Simply separate the liner or place the whole bottle in paper recycling; it will be processed during repulping.
  • Less plastic: Uses up to 77% less plastic than a standard plastic bottle.
  • Branding impact: Fully printable surface for 360° visual customisation.

Lightweighting: Sustainable Innovation

Lightweighting means redesigning the bottle by optimising wall thickness and glass distribution to deliver the same strength with less material. Cutting mass also cuts emissions: moving from ~500 g to ~300 g can reduce the CO₂ associated with bottle production and transport by about 30%. It’s no coincidence the practice is now widely adopted; leading industry sources and technical bodies rank it among the key packaging strategies to reduce costs and logistical impact.

We have chosen the Bordolese Air: a 75 cl bottle engineered to lower environmental impact. It weighs just 300 g (the lightest in the range) and enables up to an 18% CO₂ reduction versus a 360 g bottle, thanks to lower energy use and more efficient raw-material consumption.
